What is ChatGPT?

GPT (short for "Generative Pre-trained Transformer") is a large language model developed by OpenAI, a Silicon Valley-based startup founded in December 2015 by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, Reid Hoffman, and Jessica Livingston, with $1Bn in funding.

ChatGPT is a variant of GPT that is specifically designed for generating text in a chat-like style. It is trained on a large dataset of conversational exchanges, and is able to generate text that is appropriate for use in chatbots and other conversations

Why should I care?

Up to now, when we look for an answer to a question, we go to a search engine such as Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, OneSearch, etc.  When we conduct our searches, what we get are links to web pages that we need to then read to get our answer.  With ChatGPT (and other bots that are emerging), what you receive is an answer to your question, formulated in narrative format that you can read.  So, for instance, if you ask Google the question, "Compare Plato and Artistotle for me," you can see on the left side what Google comes back with, while on the right, what ChatGPT returns.  If you are looking for a high level summary comparision, ChatGPT clearly provides the superior answer.  If you want to get deeper, however, what Google provides you with will enable you to dig deeper.

But ChatGPT can do much, much more.  Here's a short list of what it can do,  according to ChatGPT:

ChatGPT can perform a variety of language-related tasks such as text completion, text generation, conversation, summarization, translation, question answering, and more. It can generate human-like text based on the input provided and can also provide informative and relevant answers to questions.
